Barrier-free accessibility should become the new normal for Ukraine. Even small actions by businesses in this area matter more than inaction. This was emphasised by Viktoria Titova, CEO of Big City Lab, during the event “How Ukrainian Businesses Can Become Accessible and Communicate Barrier-Free.”
The event was organised by Havas Village Ukraine and Havas PR in partnership with Big City Lab, which is dedicated to transforming cities through barrier-free and human-centred approaches.
The programme featured two key discussions: one on how to make businesses accessible and why it is important, and another on the environmental communication of barrier-free accessibility. Participants included Yevhen Mushkin (VDNH), Olesia Zhulynska (PrivatBank), and Olena Plakhova (Nova Poshta). The discussions were moderated by Daria Cherkashina, CEO of Havas PR.
“Barrier-free accessibility is not limited to legislation; it requires significant effort. Our experience working with businesses and government agencies shows it’s best to start with entrance areas, accessible restrooms, contrasting signage, and clear navigation. Everyone should do their part to be ready to welcome those who have been protecting us for years,” Viktoria Titova emphasised.
The participants shared insights from Ukrainian businesses implementing accessible solutions. Yevhen Mushkin spoke about the new accessible urban park at VDNH and the installation of ramps.
“Every business must define why it needs barrier-free access. For some, it’s PR; for others, employee comfort. But to create real change, you have to be honest with yourself,” he said.
Olesia Zhulynska shared PrivatBank’s experience with video consultations in sign language, while Olena Plakhova discussed the first barrier-free Nova Poshta branch and the importance of investing in accessibility.
The audience included representatives from Ukrainian and international companies such as Visa, McDonald’s, Work.ua, and Sense Bank, who had the opportunity to ask questions.
