The selection of this word is informed by quantitative input (via a Havas Group employee survey) and qualitative input (from a mix of global communications pros and thought leaders across the industry). Ultimately, it\u2019s identified by an internal team at the agency who considers all words received, not only numerically but thematically.<\/p><p>This year, when reviewing the submissions that poured in from every corner of the world, two categories of words stood out to us. One stream was around words related to flexibility fluidity adaptability, agility, comeback and change. The second was around our feelings, behaviors and attributes as people. I love its connection to resilience theory, which looks at how people are affected by things such as adversity, change, loss and risk and how they can adapt and become stronger as a result. So, it has some symmetry to last year\u2019s word of the year, which was\u00a0<em>adapt<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful word with a backbone,\u201d adds Nancy. \u201c<em>Resilience<\/em>\u00a0is not a matter of getting knocked down by a difficult circumstance and then staggering blindly into the next challenge. Rather, it\u2019s about gleaning wisdom from those difficult circumstances and getting back up with conviction and confidence.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cOur word of the year really shows that we have been through the wringer, but we\u2019re always going to keep trying,\u201d says Ellen Mallernee, VP of content. \u201cLanguage has the power to help us reframe difficult circumstances in positive ways, so each year we aim to choose a word that has some forward momentum to it.\u00a0<em>Resilience<\/em>\u00a0just feels right.\u201d<\/p><p><strong><br \/>OTHER 2022 WORDS OF THE YEAR FROM AROUND THE GLOBE<\/strong><\/p><p>Next, Ellen walks through some of the other words of the year chosen by institutions from around the world. Some of the ones she touches on include:<\/p><ul><li><em>Gaslighting,<\/em>\u00a0chosen by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/words-at-play\/word-of-the-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merriam Webster<\/a>, which is the act or practice of grossly misleading someone especially for one\u2019s own advantage<\/li><li>G<em>oblin mode,<\/em>\u00a0chosen by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/languages.oup.com\/word-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oxford English Dictionary<\/a>, defined as the idea of rejecting societal expectations put upon us in favor of doing whatever one wants to<\/li><li>P<em>ermacrisis<\/em>\u00a0chosen by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.collinsdictionary.com\/language-lovers\/a-year-of-permacrisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Collins English Dictionary<\/a>, which is a term used to describe the plethora of ongoing crises that nations across the globe are facing<\/li><li><em>Teal<\/em>\u00a0chosen by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reporter.anu.edu.au\/all-stories\/australias-2022-word-of-the-year-revealed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australia National Universit<\/a>y, which is an adjective relating to an independent political candidate or politician who advocates for greater integrity in Parliament and more action on addressing harmful climate change<\/li><li>S<em>mash<\/em>\u00a0chosen by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/smash-is-german-youth-word-of-the-year\/a-63547408#:~:text=Other%20words%20like%20%22bottomless%22%20and,10%20to%2020%20year%2Dolds.&amp;text=Continuing%20with%20the%20trend%20of,Word%20of%20the%20Year%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DW<\/a>, an English word popularized among German youth that roughly means to start something with someone, pick someone up, or have sex with someone<\/li><li><em>Homer<\/em>\u00a0chosen by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/cambridge-dictionary-names-homer-word-of-the-year-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cambridge Dictionary<\/a>, which was searched for nearly 75,000 times on the Cambridge Dictionary website during the first week of May when it was a Wordle answer, disgruntling many players whose winning streaks were ended by the unfamiliar American baseball term<\/li><\/ul><p>Within our own survey, we also received some interesting submissions, including words like <em>transmogrify<\/em>\u00a0(to change or alter greatly and often with grotesque or humorous effect) and\u00a0<em>quiet quitting<\/em>\u00a0<em>(<\/em>doing the minimum requirements of one\u2019s job and putting in no more time, effort or enthusiasm than absolutely necessary).<\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>SOME OF OUR PERSONAL WOTY PICKS<\/strong><\/p><p>Each of the panelists then walk through some of their personal WOTY submissions.<\/p><p>\u201cSimilarly to last year\u2019s word, I chose<em>\u00a0adaptability,\u00a0<\/em>which is the quality of being able to adjust or\u00a0<em>adapt,\u201d says James. \u201c<\/em>We now live in a constant state of adapting and adjusting the way we work, live, think and educate ourselves. We also must adapt our expectations for current issues, from equality and climate change to war and conflict; from navigating misinformation and disinformation to adapting our approach to business and politics. The art of adaption is a craft we\u2019re all learning to master. The world needs a rethink, and we need to be open to modifying every part of our lives to help improve our communities and society.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s always tough to identify a word of the year because it requires introspection and retrospection and the ability to examine the collective experience,\u201d says Ellen. \u201cUltimately, I chose <em>metamorphosis<\/em>\u00a0as my word. We\u2019ve all been through the gauntlet, and this was the year we got to decide how we wanted to emerge from a painful chapter.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cMost people focused on the positive with their chosen words,\u201d adds Nancy about our survey results. \u201cI think that really ties back to our word of the year, as we\u2019re forever resilient, always picking ourselves back up, treating hardships as a learning lesson, and marching forward.\u201d<\/p><p><strong><br \/>LOOKING AHEAD TO 2023<\/strong><\/p><p>Closing out our discussion, our guests reflect on this year\u2019s word and look ahead to what 2023 may bring, foreshadowing our annual Red Sky Predictions report that will be releasing in January.<\/p><p>\u201cIn 2023, I\u2019m hoping for growth as a nation, as a human race, as a community and as an economy,\u201d concludes James. \u201cBut I also think there\u2019s a word we may or may not be talking about in a year\u2019s time:\u00a0<em>Twitter<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cI hope that next year, our word isn\u2019t so much about having to cope,\u201d adds Ellen, rounding out our discussion. \u201cSo, while I haven\u2019t identified what my ideal word for 2023 would be, I just I hope for good things for all of us.
